Sigma and Pi Bonds in Ethylene | C2H4 | JEE Main PYQ
JEE Main MCQ

Number of σ (sigma) and π (pi) bonds present in ethylene (C2H4) molecule is respectively:

(A) 3 and 1
(B) 5 and 1
(C) 4 and 1
(D) 5 and 2

Correct Answer: 5 and 1

Explanation

Ethylene molecule has the structure H2C = CH2.

Each C–H single bond forms one σ bond. There are four C–H bonds giving four σ bonds.

The carbon–carbon double bond consists of one σ bond and one π bond.

Therefore, total σ bonds = 4 + 1 = 5 and total π bonds = 1.
