JEE Main Maths — Overview

JEE Main Mathematics has 30 questions (20 MCQ + 10 numerical, attempt any 25 from 30) for a maximum of 100 marks. Mathematics is considered the most time-consuming section of JEE Main — questions require multi-step calculations that take 2–4 minutes each. Students who master Maths often separate themselves significantly in percentile because many candidates struggle to complete all questions within the time limit.

With 16 lakh candidates appearing for JEE Main, every mark in Mathematics matters. A difference of just 8–12 marks in Maths can shift your percentile by 0.5–1.0, which translates to a rank change of 8,000–16,000 positions. This is why time management in JEE Main Mathematics is as important as content knowledge.

Three-Phase Preparation Strategy

Phase 1 — Build Formula Base (3 months): Learn all formulas, theorems, and standard results for each unit. For Calculus, understand derivatives and integrals of all standard functions. For Coordinate Geometry, memorize all standard equations of conic sections. For Algebra, master binomial expansion, matrix operations, and Bayes' theorem.

Phase 2 — Problem Practice (2 months): Solve chapter-wise PYQs using the Explore More links above. JEE Main Maths has a very consistent question pattern — many question types repeat year after year. After solving PYQs, identify which question types you solve slowly and practice those under timed conditions.

Phase 3 — Speed + Accuracy (1–2 months): Take full section-wise Maths mocks under timed conditions (90 minutes, 30 questions). ⏱️ JEE Main Maths Time Strategy: In the 90-minute Maths section, solve the 10 Numerical questions first — there is no negative marking for numericals, and many are straightforward substitution problems. No. Prioritize based on weightage and difficulty. Focus maximum time on Coordinate Geometry (4–5 Qs), Integral Calculus (3–4 Qs), LCD (3–4 Qs), and Matrices (2–3 Qs) — these four areas give 12–16 out of 30 questions. Units like Binomial Theorem (1 Q) and Sets (1 Q) deserve basic preparation but not disproportionate time. After mastering high-yield units, fill in the remaining units for comprehensive coverage.
Are numerical questions in JEE Main Maths hard? +
JEE Main has 10 numerical-type questions in Maths (non-MCQ, integer answer). These do NOT have negative marking — which makes them high-priority. Many numerical questions are direct formula applications or straightforward calculations. Students who practice solving numericals regularly can target 7–8 correct out of 10 numericals, which alone contributes 28–32 marks out of 100.
