In Carius method, halogens present in the organic compound are converted into silver halides. The mass of silver halide formed is used to calculate the percentage of halogen.
Given mass of organic compound = 0.2425 g
Given mass of silver chloride (AgCl) = 0.5253 g
Molar mass of AgCl:
$$ \mathrm{AgCl = 108 + 35.5 = 143.5 \ g\ mol^{-1}} $$
Out of 143.5 g of AgCl, mass of chlorine = 35.5 g
Therefore, mass of chlorine present in 0.5253 g of AgCl is:
$$ \mathrm{Mass\ of\ Cl = \frac{35.5}{143.5} \times 0.5253} $$
$$ \mathrm{Mass\ of\ Cl = 0.12999 \ g} $$
Now, percentage of chlorine in the organic compound is calculated as:
$$ \mathrm{Percentage\ of\ Cl = \frac{0.12999}{0.2425} \times 100} $$
$$ \mathrm{Percentage\ of\ Cl = 53.58\%} $$
Hence, the percentage of chlorine in the organic compound is 53.58%.
