Gas chromatography (GC): separates volatile mixtures. HPLC: high performance liquid chromatography for complex mixtures. JEE Main most frequently tests TLC and Rf values.
How is nitrogen detected in organic compounds (Lassaigne's test)? +
The organic compound is fused with sodium metal to convert N, S, X into soluble sodium salts. For nitrogen: NaCN is formed → dissolved in water → add FeSO₄ → boil → acidify with H₂SO₄ → add FeCl₃ → prussian blue colour indicates N. For sulphur: Na₂S formed → add sodium nitroprusside → violet/purple colour. For halogens: AgNO₃ test after acidifying (white ppt = Cl, pale yellow = Br, yellow = I).
What is the principle of steam distillation? +
Steam distillation is used to purify compounds that are immiscible with water and have high boiling points. The mixture boils when sum of partial pressures = atmospheric pressure. Since the compound boils at a lower temperature than its normal boiling point, heat-sensitive compounds can be purified without decomposition. Example: purification of aniline and nitrobenzene. Not suitable for compounds that react with water or are soluble in water.
