Count the total electron pairs around the central atom (bonding pairs + lone pairs). Arrange them to minimize repulsion. Geometry: 2 pairs = linear, 3 pairs = trigonal planar, 4 pairs = tetrahedral, 5 pairs = trigonal bipyramidal, 6 pairs = octahedral. Shape considers only atom positions: 4 bp + 0 lp = tetrahedral, 4 bp... wait — 3 bp + 1 lp = trigonal pyramidal (NH₃), 2 bp + 2 lp = bent (H₂O). JEE Main frequently tests geometry and bond angles.
What are hybridization types and examples? +
sp hybridization: linear (180°), e.g. BeCl₂, C₂H₂. sp² hybridization: trigonal planar (120°), e.g. BF₃, C₂H₄. sp³ hybridization: tetrahedral (109.5°), e.g. CH₄, NH₃. sp³d: trigonal bipyramidal, e.g. PCl₅. sp³d²: octahedral, e.g. SF₆. Lone pairs reduce bond angles: NH₃ (107°), H₂O (104.5°) due to lp-bp repulsion being greater than bp-bp.
What is molecular orbital theory? +
MOT describes bonding through combination of atomic orbitals to form bonding (σ, π) and antibonding (σ*, π*) molecular orbitals. Bond order = (bonding electrons - antibonding electrons)/2. Higher bond order = stronger, shorter bond. If bond order = 0, molecule doesn't exist (He₂). Paramagnetism occurs when unpaired electrons exist in MOs. JEE Main tests bond order and magnetic character of O₂, N₂, B₂, C₂, F₂.
