Ionization energy increases across a period (left to right) and decreases down a group. Exceptions: IE of Be > B (2s is more stable than 2p), IE of N > O (half-filled 2p is extra stable). Second ionization energy is always higher than first. When an electron is removed from a stable configuration (like filled or half-filled subshell), IE spikes dramatically. JEE Main tests these trends and exceptions.
How does electronegativity vary in the periodic table? +
Electronegativity increases across a period (more nuclear charge, smaller radius, stronger pull on electrons) and decreases down a group (larger atoms, electrons farther from nucleus). Most electronegative element: Fluorine (3.98 on Pauling scale). Least: Cesium/Francium. Used to determine bond polarity: if ΔEN > 1.7, ionic; 0.4-1.7, polar covalent; < 0.4, nonpolar covalent.
What are the anomalous properties of first elements in groups? +
First elements in each group (Li, Be, B, C, N, O, F) differ from others due to: small size, high charge density, maximum covalency = 4 (no d orbitals), and strong tendency to form pπ-pπ bonds. Diagonal relationship: Li resembles Mg, Be resembles Al, B resembles Si in many properties. These anomalous properties are consistently tested in JEE Main Inorganic questions.
