NEET Physics — Overview & What to Expect

NEET Physics has 45 questions (attempt any 45 out of 50 total) for a maximum of 180 marks. Physics is the most calculation-heavy section of NEET. Unlike Biology which is primarily fact-based and Chemistry which balances facts and numericals, Physics demands strong conceptual understanding combined with numerical problem-solving speed. This is why students who crack NEET Physics with 140+ marks almost always end up in top ranks.

Class 11 Physics contributes approximately 18–20 questions and Class 12 contributes approximately 25–27 questions. Both halves are important — do not neglect Class 11 Mechanics, Thermodynamics, or Waves even if they feel harder. Many students drop 15–20 marks just by skipping Class 11 chapters.

⚠️ Syllabus Note: NEET Physics follows the latest reduced syllabus notified by NMC. Always verify from the official NEET information bulletin before starting preparation. Deleted topics should not be studied to save preparation time.

📚 Strategy: NCERT + HC Verma + PYQs is all you need for 150+ in NEET Physics. Do not buy 5–6 books. Master 2–3 deeply — that always beats owning 10 books and finishing none.

Preparation Strategy — How to Score 160+ in NEET Physics

Phase 1 — Concept Building (First 4 months): Read NCERT Physics thoroughly — understand every concept, not just formulas. After each unit, immediately solve HC Verma examples and exercises for that unit. Never skip NCERT in-text examples and back exercises — NEET often tests the exact type of problems from NCERT examples.

Phase 2 — PYQ Practice (Next 2 months): Solve 10 years of chapter-wise PYQs using the Explore More links in the unit cards above. Focus on the top 6 high-yield units first — Electrostatics, Optics, Modern Physics, Current Electricity, Electronic Devices, and Thermodynamics. These units together contribute 18–22 out of 45 Physics questions every year. After finishing all PYQs, identify weak chapters and revise them specifically.

Phase 3 — Mock Tests + Revision (Final 2 months): Take full-length NEET mock tests every week. Analyse your Physics chapter-wise performance after each mock. Spend extra time on high-yield weak units. Keep a daily formula revision sheet covering all important Physics formulas — read it every morning before studying.

🎯 Exam Day Strategy: Attempt Biology first — it is faster and builds confidence. Finish Biology in under 40 minutes. Then solve Chemistry, then Physics. In Physics, never spend more than 2 minutes on any single question. Skip tough ones and return at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many units are in NEET Physics? +
NEET Physics has 20 units — 10 from Class 11 (Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Waves) and 10 from Class 12 (Electricity, Magnetism, Optics, Modern Physics, Electronics). All 20 units are in scope for NEET. Click on any unit card above to practice that unit's PYQs directly.
Which unit has the highest weightage in NEET Physics? +
Unit 11 (Electrostatics) consistently has the highest individual weightage with 3–4 questions every year. Optics (Unit 16) and Modern Physics (Units 17–18 combined) also contribute 3–4 questions each. These three areas alone account for 9–12 out of 45 Physics questions.
Is NCERT enough for NEET Physics? +
No. Unlike Biology where NCERT is almost sufficient, Physics requires additional numerical practice. Read NCERT first for all concepts, then practice numericals from HC Verma and solve 10 years of PYQs chapter-wise. NCERT alone will not prepare you for the calculation-based questions in NEET Physics.
How to score 160+ in NEET Physics? +
To score 160+ (40 correct out of 45 attempted): complete full NCERT with examples, practice HC Verma exercises unit-by-unit, solve 3+ rounds of PYQs for every chapter using the links above, focus maximum effort on top 6 high-yield units, and take at least 8–10 full NEET mock tests in the final 2 months with serious error analysis after each test.
Can I skip Communication Systems in NEET Physics? +
You should not skip it entirely, but it is low priority — it gives 0–1 question. If time is short, spend 1–2 hours reading the NCERT chapter on Communication Systems (basic concepts of modulation, bandwidth, EM propagation) and move on. Never invest heavy preparation time here when Electrostatics, Optics, and Modern Physics each give 3–4 questions.
Is Class 11 or Class 12 Physics more important? +
Both are important. Class 12 contributes approximately 25–27 questions and Class 11 contributes approximately 18–20 questions. Never neglect Class 11 — Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, and Oscillations together give 10–12 questions from Class 11 alone. Students who skip Class 11 Physics typically lose 40–50 marks in NEET.
